Italian photographer Paolo Ciaberta shares some images from a recent bikepacking tour in the High Atlas mountains of Morocco

We wanted a bikepacking adventure, and decided on Morocco as the destination for it. It’s not too far from our home in Italy, it’s cheap to travel there, the food is good, the people are friendly, and we wanted to ride somewhere different and exotic.

We began our adventure in the village of Agoudal in the High Atlas mountains, and it didn’t take long to realise how beautiful the landscapes were, or how much diversity there was between them, from little villages, to rocky deserts, and luxuriant oases.

Splitting our nights between wild camp locations and overnight stays in local casbahs, which are the low-key guesthouses present in most towns and villages, we made our way through the famous Dades Gorge, and the ancient town of Aït Ben Haddou.

Eventually, after traversing the gravel roads, barren mountain passes and empty desert plains of inland Morocco, we arrived in Marrakech. It had been a five-day ride, covering 550 kilometres and with almost 6,000m of elevation gain: An unforgettable bikepacking experience, and one that we’d recommend to anyone.’
